OVERVIEW
OVERVIEW

The BSc in Civil Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET, , under the commission’s General Criteria and Program Criteria for Civil and Similarly Named Engineering Programs.

The BSc in Civil Engineering program lays the foundation for core civil engineering disciplines while engaging students to study and understand the overall global civil engineering profession and industry. Principles of science and engineering are applied to the design and analysis of problems in civil engineering in well-designed course sequences to ensure that students gain hands on and problem-based learning experiences. The mission of BSc in Civil Engineering program at the Khalifa University of Science and Technology is to provide a high-quality education and prepare students for successful careers in this field.

Student Outcomes (Program Learning Outcomes)

Students graduating with a BSc in Civil Engineering will attain the following:

(1)

An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.

(2)

An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.

(3)

An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.

(4)

An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.

(5)

An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.

(6)

An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.

(7)

An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.

Career Opportunities

Due to the broadness and versatility of the Civil Engineering Profession, Civil Engineers are employed by a large variety of private companies as well as by government, national, and local authorities throughout the public sector. Examples of private sector employers are structural and geotechnical engineering consultancies, infrastructure construction and contractor firms, architectural design offices, urban and transportation planning & consulting companies, project management firms, and environmental engineering consultancies. In the public sector, civil engineers are found in all the centralized (governmental) and local technical engineering agencies and authorities which, decide, authorize, and overlook the planning, the construction, and the maintenance of public civil engineering works, structures, and infrastructure (e.g. buildings, roads, bridges, airports, seaports, highways, public transportation systems, power plants, energy and environmental infrastructure etc.) as well as regulating the design and construction of private civil engineering works and structures to the standards of construction and building codes of practice. In every case, Civil Engineers work indoors to plan and design engineering systems, structures, and infrastructure in close collaboration with other engineering disciplines and architects, while interacting with clients, local councils & authorities, and government agencies. Invariably, Civil Engineers conduct on-site inspections of existing infrastructure facilities and systems in operation as well as attend construction sites.

The current employability prospects for Civil Engineers are quite positive in the UAE and beyond as governments and the private sector rely on Civil Engineers to facilitate the sustainable development of communities towards circular and net-zero economy while ensuring their resilience to natural hazards.

Professional Chapters

ASCE Student Chapter

The mission of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Chapter is to provide an enriching experience to its members and to build academic, social and professional relationships in addition to developing leadership, advocating lifelong learning and promoting professionalism. The Student Chapter conducts regular meetings with speakers from a variety of civil engineering fields on professional issues and technical topics. It organizes field trips in different related domains: Geotechnical, Structural, Construction and Environmental. Also, it participates in community service projects, ensures entries in national and international competitions, helps students participate in the ASCE Student Conferences and sends potential members to workshops for Student Chapter Leaders. The ASCE Student Chapter offers students an excellent opportunity to learn more about the civil engineering profession and to meet with the civil engineering professionals and learn from them.
